Life Story for Earl William Lowe

Earl William Lowe
February 26th, 1925- September 27, 2014

On September 27, 2014, Earl William Lowe of Pikesville. Father of the late Patricia Francis, father-in-law of Raymond Francis. Grandfather of Monica and husband Michael Simonsen, Alyssa and wife Suzanne Fenix. Great grandfather of Stanley and Dane Simonsen and Brayden Fenix. Brother of Paul and wife Jean Lowe. He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia Lowe and his companion, Adelle Snyder.
After graduating from high school, in his home town of Talcott, West Virginia. Earl took courses in blueprint reading and welding at what was then Beckley College and is now the University of Charleston-Beckley. His goal was to get a job in the Baltimore shipyards, but he soon discovered that, at 17 years old, he was too young. Earl went to work instead at the Glenn L. Martin aircraft and aerospace company in Middle River where he taught welding to young women. (The Glenn L. Martin Company became Martin Marrietta in 1955 and Lockheed martin in 1995.) All Earl’s friends were in the Army, and he was able to enlist in 1944. After leaving the service in 1946, Earl worked briefly for Fisher Body and then temporarily (he thought) for the Kippers Company, where he wound up staying for more than 32 years. At a Koppers plant in Harmans, MD, southwest of BWI-Thurgood Marshall airport off Dorsey Road, Earl was in charge of building maintenance, safety, fire protection, and first aid.
Earl has been active in the American Legion for many years. He was the district commander for the southern Maryland district in 1959-1960, and he participated in speaking engagements as part of the Legion’s Americanism program designed to promote American values.
Another of Earl’s interests has been the Glen Burnie Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as the president and also as the department’s chaplain. As an EMT (emergency medical technician), Earl delivered babies and provided other emergency care. He liked to point out that the “real” action takes place in the back of the ambulance as opposed to up front with the driver. As a fire department volunteer, Earl taught CPR and first aid for more than 40 years. He taught those specialties at the Anne Arundel Community College and Towson University.
Funeral Services will be held Milford Mill United Methodist Church on Monday, 11am. Family will receive friends at the Church on Monday from 10:30 am until time of service. Interment Crownsville Veterans Cemetery at 2:30pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Milford Mill United Methodist Church, 915 Milford Mill Road, Pikesville, MD 21208 or the Glen Burnie VFD, P.O. Box 1612, Glen Burnie, MD 21060.
