Obituary for Bertha May Scroggy (Smith)

Bertha May Scroggy, 97, passed away on September 24, 2015 at Golden Living Center in Westminster, MD. Born August 23, 1918 in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Robert H. Smith and the late Bertha Nightingale Smith. She was the wife of the late Paul James Scroggy, who died in 1988.

May and her husband owned and ran a small gas station and grocery store for many years in Pemberton, NJ, until they moved to Seminole, FL in 1966. She worked as an office manager and bookkeeper and then worked at Seminole High School in the cafeteria until she was 83. In 2001 she moved to Reisterstown, MD and in 2014 to Golden Living Center. She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary in NJ and in the American Business Women’s Association in Florida.

May is survived by her daughter, Louise Flora and her husband, Frank of Westminster; her grandsons Christopher and wife Juanita of Westminster, Stephen and wife Christina of Scottsdale, AZ and Robert and girlfriend Vanessa Nakoski of Mt. Airy; great-grandchildren Kaitlyn and Nathan Flora of Westminster and Jillian, Valerie and Patrick Flora of Scottsdale, AZ; brother William Smith of Largo, FL and Howard Smith and wife Karen of Prescott, AZ. She was predeceased by brother Edward Smith of PA.

The family will receive friends at the Eline Funeral Home, 2901 Bloom Road (at Rt. 91), Finksburg, MD on Monday, September 28, 2015 from 6-8pm. There will be a graveside service at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Pemberton, NJ on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at 12:00pm.
