Obituary for Stephen Halley Cherneski
Stephen Halley Cherneski: 29 March 1986 – 15 September 2015
Stephen Halley Cherneski of Niceville, Florida, passed away in his father’s home in Hampstead, Maryland, at sunrise on Tuesday, September 15th, 2015. He was 29 years old. He bravely fought a painful four-month battle with cancer.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised in Carroll County, Maryland, he enjoyed the outdoors and motorcycles as a young man. After high school, Stephen enlisted in the US Army as a member of 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and then later transferred to 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), where he served as a senior Special Forces Engineer Sergeant and achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class. He completed two combat tours in Afghanistan, and also deployed to South America. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (posthumously), the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Special Forces Tab, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. His fellow Green Berets loved his work ethic, positive attitude, easy smile, and remarkable shooting skills.
On weekends in Niceville, Stephen would often be found out on his boat or riding his Harley. Anyone who knew Stephen would tell you that the most important thing to him was family. He was a cherished son, beloved brother, exemplary soldier, and honorable man. He will be remembered for his gentle nature, pure heart, humble spirit, tireless dedication, and loyalty to his family and friends.
He is survived by his Mother, Father and Stepmother, four brothers, one sister, one stepbrother, one stepsister, and his much loved German shepherd Gypsy. Stephen will be missed tremendously.
Memorial service will be held in Hancock, Maryland, on Saturday, September 26th. Interment will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington,Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to The Underground Railroad (https://ourrescue.org) in memory of Stephen Cherneski.
