Obituary for Robert Irving Anthony

Robert Irving Anthony, 98, of Manchester (formerly of Pikesville, MD) passed away on February 9, 2024 at Autumn Lake Healthcare at Long View in Manchester. Robert (Bob) was born on October 26, 1925 in Baltimore, MD to the late Melvin and Hazel Anthony. He was the loving husband of Mary Elizabeth Kammer, his childhood sweetheart. They were married for 77 years. He was the loving father of daughters Mary Anthony Butler and Robin Michelle Varacalle (Brian), loving grandfather of Andrew Arconti (Lauren), Airman Nicholaus Varacalle, and Katarina Varacalle; loving great-grandfather to Nolan Riker Arconti, Pierce Montgomery Arconti and Annora Jenivie McCoy Arconti. He was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Wynant and her daughter, Carol Newton.

Bob’s favorite possession was a 1935 coupe with a rumble seat that he bought for $25. He served in the 8th Airforce stationed at Norwich, England during World War II; he was the tail gunner on a B-24 Liberator and was flacked down over Belgium. He earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. After his military service, he attended the Maryland Institute of Art and studied mechanical drawing and drafting. He was an apprentice as a Tool & Die Maker and later as a Quality Control Engineer for Gould and Martin Marietta. Bob was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 03960. After retirement, he enjoyed professional ice dancing competing at the Silver level. He also enjoyed making stained glass, raising collies, and home improvements.

Family will receive friends Saturday February 17, 2024, 10:00am at St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church, 101 Church Lane, Pikesville, MD 21208. A Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00am. Entombment will follow in Druid Ridge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob’s memory may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor or Daily Bread in care of St. Charles
