Obituary for Richard Henry Hartlove

Richard Henry Hartlove, 83, a steadfast son of Maryland and champion of Baltimore, who cherished his roots in Dundalk, passed away peacefully on April 15 in Bridging Life Hospice at Sinai Hospital. He had been in declining health for several months.

Dick was born in Baltimore on Dec. 3, 1939, to Bertha Marie Newton and William E. Hartlove Sr. A proud graduate of Dundalk High School, Class of 1957, he served in the U.S. Army as a construction helper in the Corp of Engineers. Upon discharge from the military, Dick began to hone his skills in design by working as a draftsman.

Throughout his lifetime, he learned from every job he took on, including service at Broyles & Broyles, Hamilton & Spiegel, AVM Corporation and Monkton Mechanical in the Baltimore-Washington area, and Poole & Kent in North Carolina. In 1994, he joined Allen & Shariff in Columbia, MD, a Design-Build-Manage company that serves clients worldwide. He retired as a vice president several years ago, having significantly contributed to Allen & Shariff’s engineering, construction and project management areas.

Dick also leveraged his engineering talents outside the workplace. His Reisterstown home that he shared with his wife of 35 years, Regina Graham Hartlove, was their pride and joy, and Dick had a hand in every aspect of its early rehab and eventual large addition, which he designed and for which he oversaw construction. His basement workshop was filled with dozens of tools, interesting gadgets, large saws and other woodworking and construction equipment, and he used them with abandon.

Dick enjoyed playing golf, a single-malt scotch, cooking for family and friends and cheering on the Orioles and Ravens. He was an avid reader of American history, a model train enthusiast, and had a spot in his heart for the many Beagles he and Regina rescued and raised. He was a member of the Western Maryland Railway Historical Society, the Engineering Society of Baltimore, ASHRAE, ASPE, the American Legion Post 0038 of Dundalk and the Optimist Clubs of Reisterstown-Owings Mills and Dundalk.

He is survived by his wife, Regina Graham Hartlove, his daughters, Jacqueline Hartlove Crandell (Robert) and Arlene Hartlove Barry (Michael) of Dundalk; his granddaughters Kayleigh Crandell of Richmond, VA, and Olivia Barry of Dundalk; his former wife and mother of his children, Josephine Tallon Swagger; sisters-in-law Carol Hartlove Farmer (the late G. James), Kathleen Graham and Rose Mary Tallon; brothers-in-law Robert Graham (Maureen) and Raymond Tallon; cousins Gail Parran (Thomas) and Dennis Smith (Patricia) and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers, Robert, who died in infancy, and William E. Hartlove Jr; his sister Bertha Harding Harrell (the late Charles) and his close friend Patrick Kelly.

The family will receive friends and visitors on Sunday, April 23 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Road, Reisterstown, Md. A memorial service will take place at the funeral home on Monday, April 24 at noon. Burial with military honors is scheduled on Tuesday, April 25 at 11:30 a.m. at Garrison Forest Cemetery, Owings Mills, MD.
