Obituary for Melvina V. Stricklin (Wagner)

The Rev. Melvina V. Stricklin, age 83, of Ocean Pines formerly of Hampstead, MD died Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at her home in Ocean Pines.

Born October 24, 1939, in Melrose, MD, she was the daughter of the late Herschel C. and Julia L. Sullivan Wagner. She was the wife of the late John Wayne Stricklin who died August 9, 2001.

In her early career she was vice president at Carroll County Bank and Trust Co., now Truist Bank. During her banking career she was appointed by the County Commissioners to the Employer Advisory Council. She also served on the Career Technology Employer Advisory Council for 17 years. For 2 years she served as president of the board for F.U.R.S.T., a users’ group of a Florida software company that consisted of 5,000 to 6,000 financial members nationwide.

She received her undergraduate degree from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, now known as Notre Dame University of Maryland. In 1995, she graduated from Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary with a Masters of Divinity degree and was ordained in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America that same year. Serving as a pastor of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Upperco, MD, until she retired in August 2015.

She formerly was a member of the Board of Trustees of Carroll Lutheran Village, a former president of the board of NESAP, a local non-profit that helps the needy in local communities, and was a former member of the Board of Trustees for Carroll Lutheran School. She also served as co-chaplain of Arcadia Volunteer Fire Company.

She had a great sense of humor and was noted for her athletic skills, especially playing softball on Snydersburg Women’s Softball Team until she was almost 50. She enjoyed working on puzzles, especially Sudoku and most of all loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters, Michelle Stansfield, Ocean City, MD, Terri Bradford and husband Chuck, Ocean Pines, MD; grandsons, Brandon and wife Tish, Kody and wife Annie, and Logan; great-grandchildren, Kellen, Emma, Ryan, and Cody; brothers Douglas Wagner, Glen Rock, PA and Elwin Wagner, Manchester, MD. She was predeceased by her brother Arnold Wagner.

Memorial services will be held at Bethany United Methodist Church 8648 Stephen Decatur Hwy, Berlin, MD 21811 on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at 11 am with The Reverend William Sterling presiding. As well as at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church 15773 Dover Road, Upperco, MD 21155 on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at 11 am with Bishop William Gohl and The Reverend Matthew Schenning officiating the service. Private burial service will be held at St. John’s (Leisters) Lutheran Church Cemetery, Westminster MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 15773 Dover Rd., Upperco, MD 21155 or to the charity of one’s choice.
