Obituary for Mary D. Long (Davis)

Mary Davis Long, daughter of the late Robert and Mabel Davis, was born on June 30, 1925 in Sparrows Point, Maryland. She departed this life on Thursday March 4, 2021 at home of natural causes. At the age of 95, Mary’s cognitive memory was very sharp until her death.

Affectionately known as “Aunt Mary” among family and friends, she graduated from Dunbar High School in the Baltimore School System. Upon graduation, she moved to Philadelphia and applied to Franklin School of Science and Arts and graduated as a Lab Technician. Mary worked as the Head Supervisor of the Medical Lab at the VA Hospital in Philadelphia until her retirement. She worked part-time assisting the nurse with the young ladies at Girls High School in Philadelphia.

She moved back to Baltimore in 1998 to be with her family. Upon her return, she joined St. Mark’s on the Hill Episcopal Church in Pikesville. She initiated the Mary Davis Long Scholarship Fund as a member of the church.

Mary was an accomplished seamstress who learned to sew at a very early age. Sewing was her passion. She always made clothes for her family especially her nieces and nephews and their children. When she lived in Philadelphia, she crocheted hats and scarves for sailors. She also made men’s suits, ladies dresses and hats upon request. Seven years ago, she made (46) little girls dresses wanting to go on a Missionary trip to Nigeria, but was prevented by the outbreak of the Ebola virus in that country.

Aunt Mary loved travelling during her lifetime having travelled to London, Italy, Paris, Bermuda, Jamaica, St. Martin’s and Las Vegas. She was one who enjoyed people. She would start a conversation with anyone. She was well-versed in sports, history and politics, but could talk on any subject.

An avid reader, she also enjoyed travelling to family reunions; playing the slots and lotteries; she loved children and always encouraged them to get the best education available. She habitually passed out the famous $2 bills to everyone for their birthday, anniversary, weddings, valentine day, and for all special events and occasions.

For her 90th birthday, she arranged transportation to have her friends from Philadelphia to come and celebrate her momentous event at her church. Family and friends from different locations also joined the special occasion. Mary was well known and a favorite in her own circle of family and friends.

She was predeceased in death by her parents, sisters: Geneva, Fannie, Lauretta, Lucille and brothers, Paul and Vinson. She leaves to mourn: a devoted and special niece, Alena Givens, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 19, 2021 from 10-11am at St. Mark’s on the Hill, Pikesville. Service will be held on Friday, March 19, 2021, 11am the church. Interment in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
