Life Story for Marian Penney Randall (Clapp)
Marian Penney Randall died at home on June 11, 2019, after a long illness. She was born in Buffalo, New York, March 31, 1934. Her parents were Thomas Penney, Junior, an attorney, and Elizabeth Clapp Penney, an active volunteer in good causes. Marian followed her mother and aunt to Smith College, from which she graduated in 1956. Later that year, she married her childhood friend, Harry G. Randall, who was by then a medical student at Johns Hopkins, and moved to Baltimore. After raising three children, Marian returned to school in 1977, and in 1980 received a Master of Social Work from the University of Maryland. She had an active practice in mental health counselling as a licensed clinical social worker until her retirement in 2004.
Throughout her life Marian was a passionate supporter of the arts, education and the environment. From 1961 to 1972, she was a docent at the Baltimore Museum of Art, where she was a great devotee of the Cone Collection and the work of Henri Matisse. She was an active and enthusiastic member of the Smith College Alumnae Association and worked tirelessly on book sales and other efforts to raise money for women’s education. In 1966, Marian took her three young children to Alford Lake Camp in Maine, where she taught sailing for seventeen consecutive summers. In later summers Marian and Harry loved to cruise by sailboat with family and friends and by age seventy they added up that they had spent one year of their lives afloat off the coast of Maine. An avid reader and learner, Marian continued to discuss recent writing and news developments until shortly before her death. Marian was a faithful member of St. John’s Church, Glyndon, for almost fifty years.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Dr. Harry G. Randall, a daughter, the Reverend Elizabeth P. Randall (Alan Gottlieb) of Denver, two sons, Clyde L. Randall (Leslie Perry) of Monkton and Dr. Thomas C. Randall (Dr. Katrina Armstrong) of Boston, her grandchildren, Sarah (Nicholas), Marian (Austin), Marta, Emily, William, Samantha, and Katharine and one great granddaughter, Sophia.
Burial and funeral services will be at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Glyndon, Saturday, August 17, 2019, 11:00am.
