Obituary for Joseph Frank Noto

Family and friends are mourning the loss of Joseph Frank Noto of Reisterstown, MD who passed away on January 2nd at home surrounded by family after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 86 years old.
He was the husband of Sallie Jane (nee Speer) Noto and loving father and wonderful father-in-law to Jennifer Lyn (nee Noto) Castellani (Michael) and Joseph Vincent Noto (Rachel). He was born on October 17,1935 in New York, NY to the late Frank Vincent and Elizabeth (nee Sabella) Noto.

In addition to his wife and children, Joe is also survived by his grandchildren, with whom he found the most joy, Sarah, Nick, Ella, Caroline, and Joseph. He often would make up pirate stories, could be found giving instruction on golf swings, doing puzzles, watching favorite videos, taking walks and napping with a grandchild on his chest. He made many great memories traveling to Disney World, Ocean City and Hershey Park with his grandchildren. He was truly the best “Pa”. He is also survived by loving nieces and nephews and numerous dear and loving cousins.

He lived in Manhattan for 6 years and then moved to Brooklyn, NY. Shortly after, his sister Marie Ann was born and then brother Frank was born when Joe was 9 years old. Joe attended Xavier High School, a catholic military school located in Manhattan. He went on to receive a bachelor's degree in physics from Fordham University and joined the ROTC. He then joined the United States Airforce as a 2nd lieutenant in the Airforce Physics Division. His responsibilities included being a physicist and director of research. He was stationed in New Mexico. He then moved to Maryland to start a job at Westinghouse and met his wife Sallie Jane Speer. They married in June of 1965 and had Jennifer 1 year later. His son Joseph was born in 1971.

Joe was a lifetime student and was always interested in learning something new. He loved the learning process and made the decision to go into teaching to teach math and physics. He started at Archbishop Curley and coached wrestling and then transferred to Franklin High School. He taught math and coached indoor and outdoor track and girls’ softball. During the summers Joe worked part time at Goddard Space Center for several years. He always enjoyed learning about space and flying. He later worked as a realtor and after retirement worked at Santoni’s Marketplace in Glyndon.

Joseph enjoyed traveling with his wife, family members and friends. He traveled to England, Germany, Austria, Scotland, Eastern Europe and Italy many times through the years. He met extended family in his ancestral home town of Sciacca in Sicily. Joe got much joy in bringing back wine from Italy to share at his daughter and sons’ weddings.

For 20 years Joe celebrated “Cousins Weekends” at Long Beach Island with his siblings and many of his cousins who have remained close since childhood. These were cherished times for the family.

Joe was an active member in the Sons of Italy of Maryland and served as state treasurer. He also volunteered for Meal on Wheels for several years.

He always loved his cats and dogs, really liked a good conversation, got great enjoyment out of slapstick comedies and had a wonderful mischievous smile.

Joe enjoyed playing poker with many of his fellow teachers, golfing, taking Italian courses to learn the language, bowling, woodworking, performing in theater productions and reading.
