Obituary for Helen Louise Meyers (Spurrier)

Helen Louise Meyers, age 99, formerly a resident of Reisterstown, passed away peacefully at Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster on August 28, 2021. Louise was born at home on February 10, 1922 and grew-up in Finksburg. She attended Westminster High School, graduating in 1939. She was the daughter of Viola Barnes and Ernest Spurrier, with two older brothers Everly Spurrier and LeRoy Spurrier who predeceased her. As a child she enjoyed reading and writing and became very good with shorthand while in high school. In her later years she enjoyed keeping a journal and wrote entries for the literary magazine at her retirement community. She also enjoyed baking and was known among her family and friends for her cakes, especially for her hot milk sponge caked with crunchy fudge icing.

In 1940, after completing a legal secretarial course at Strayer Business School, she worked for several years for an attorney in Baltimore City. In 1943 she married Joseph L. “Bubby” Meyers while he was on leave from the US Airforce. In 1946 they had their first child, eventually having 3 daughters and one son. She and her husband built a home on his family’s farm in Reisterstown, moving there in 1952.

In the 1960s with her oldest child in college and her youngest in first grade, Louise returned to the workforce becoming an administrative assistant in the Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Office, retiring in 1992 after 26 years of service. Earlier in 1986, her husband had passed away suddenly, but Louise remained in the family home they had built until 2002, when at age 80 she moved into an independent living apartment at Carroll Lutheran Village. At age 96, she transitioned into the assisted living facility where she resided until her death at age 99. During her 19 year residency at CLV she made many friends and became beloved by the staff.

She is survived by her four loving children: Cheryl Eisenhauer (Doug), Joseph Lee Meyers (Barbara), Nancy Meyers, and Amy Becker. Five grandchildren: Patrick Eisenhauer (Kimberly), Kerrie Snead (Philip), Leslie Meyers, Moriah Becker, and Alec Becker. Also survived by five great-grandchildren, one great- great- grandchild, and loving nieces and nephews.
