Obituary for Harry Edward Thompson

Harry Edward Thompson,Sr. passed away suddenly but painlessly on March 29, 2022 at his home in Owings Mills, MD at the age of 92. Harry was born June 29, 1929 in Worthington Valley, Maryland to Howard Worthington and Ida McFall Thompson. He was predeased in death by his parents, brothers Tommy (Katherine), Paul (Ruth), Clarence, Danny (Dolly), Micky (Annabelle), Otis (Billie), Ducky (Flo), sisters Margaret Long (Wilbur), Ethel Morrison (Fred), Dorothy Bay (Bob), son Timothy Mark (Ruth), and daughter Patricia Driever (David). He is survived by his wife Ruth, sisters Grace Dritt (Dave) and Shirley Thompson, son Harry Jr. (Dawn), and daughter Jackie Tangires (Charlie). He is also survived by his 11 grandchildren: Heather Seda, Sarah Hooper (Kyle), Jesse, and Harry III Thompson, Corey, Brandon, and Amanda Driever, Tim and Jenna Tangires, Ashley Coe (Tommy), and Robby Barnard and three great grandchildren: Josh Wotring, Katy Overby and Clementine Hooper and 41 nieces and nephews.

Harry grew up on a farm in Worthington Valley, MD. He attended Franklin High School in Reisterstown, MD and later worked as a horse trainer. He enlisted in the Army in 1948 and served almost four years in the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, with over three years of service in Germany. The Army commended Harry for his outstanding marksmanship in an international competition and awarded him the Occupation Medal for Germany. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and culminated his military career as an Armory (Firearms) Foreman before being Honorably Discharged in 1952. After his military service, Harry married the former Ruth Sophia Diem on June 13, 1954 and raised four children in the Glyndon/Reisterstown and Owings Mills areas. He and his family attended Sacred Heart Church in Glyndon, MD where he frequently volunteered his services. He was a Boy Scout volunteer for years and an avid fisherman, not to mention being Mr. Fixit. Harry was an electrician for the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company, where he was medically retired in 1985 after being severely burned. He later worked at Santoni’s Market in Glyndon, MD.

Harry is remembered as a gentle giant and had a great sense of humor. He knew something about everything and would do anything to help anyone.

The family will accept friends for a visitation held Sunday, April 3, 2022, 2-4:00 pm & 7-9:00 pm at Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Rd. Reisterstown, Maryland 21136. A viewing will be held Monday, April 4, 2022, 9:30 - 10 am with a funeral mass beginning at 10 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 63 Sacred Heart Lane, Glyndon, MD. 21071. Interment will be in Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at 10:45 am.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or American Heart Association, in honor of his deceased children.
