Obituary for George William Baublitz

George Baublitz, 80, died suddenly and unexpectedly on September 29, 2021, in Hanover, PA. He was a resident of Homewood at Plum Creek, along with his wife of 26 years, Rev. Dot Thormaehlen.

Born March 22, 1941 in Finksburg, MD, he was the son of the late Jesse and Marie Baublitz. He grew up on Park Heights Avenue in Green Spring valley and was a graduate of Franklin High School. He received a BA in English from the University of Maryland College Park and was proud to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work with a Master of Social Work Degree, Clinical Concentration, in 1972, where he felt he received an excellent education. He was in the Army Reserves for over 6 years.

George was a State of Maryland employee for over 30 years. His entire career was spent in various capacities as a social worker, primarily at Carroll County Department of Social Service, but also at Washington County Social Services, Frederick County Health Department, and Springfield State Hospital, from which he retired. He served on numerous boards and committees in Carroll County, MD. He continued to use his skills in retirement on a volunteer basis, conducting a mental health group at a local church. George was not focused on material things and making money, but was invested in helping others learn to live better and more hopeful lives, something on which you could not put a price tag. He saw much tragedy and heartbreak as well and joy and sorrow in his work, but the satisfaction was in helping others meet the challenges they faced, regardless of circumstances, and helping them move forward with their lives. He was an incredibly compassionate and caring person with a strong sense of justice and service to others, a loving and dedicated husband, step-father, grandfather, family member, and faithful and loyal friend.

George had a cheerful temperament, bringing joy to others in his daily life through the small things in life. Most of all, George was truly a master of the pun and one-liner jokes, his sense of humor a gift he brought to people and brightened their days. He loved a good chuckle and laughing along with others whenever possible!

He loved camping and being out in the natural world, particularly Sky Line Drive, and enjoyed RV’ing to many national parks from Florida to Cape Briton Isle, from Maryland to California. He liked the Orioles, Ravens, sprint car racing, NASCAR, automobiles, and trains. He loved Disney World most of all, making numerous trips to Florida through the years. At Homewood he enjoyed participating in the Train Group, Men’s Group, classes, and loved having a part in a skit presented to the community for an evening of entertainment.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by step-children Dee Jones, Dave Jones and wife Maribeth; brother Donald Baublitz and wife Marilyn; sister Joyce DeFoor and family friend Gail Fiedler; and two nieces and their families, and step-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held graveside at 11 AM on October 22, 2021 at Druid Ridge Cemetery, 7900 Park Heights Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21208 with Rev. Dr. Joel Hummel, Chaplain at Homewood, officiating. Please gather at 10:30 AM at the building on the left when entering the cemetery for escort to the gravesite at 10:45 AM.
