Obituary for Douglas J Piper

Douglas J Piper of Finksburg passed away surrounded by family at Dove House on Friday, December 30th. Doug was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on August 13, 1942, to Doris (Jaffe) and DeForest Piper and raised in Ionia, Michigan. He graduated as a civil engineer from the University of Michigan where he met his wife of 57 years and 11 months, Lynne Lemmerhirt. They lived in 7 states and Argentina before settling in Maryland with their four children for the last 44 years.

He spent many of his years traveling all over the world for business and encouraged his children to travel. Doug was a WGA (world’s greatest anything) and shared his many talents with his kids and grandkids including his love of the outdoors, how to change a tire, and how to properly sweep the garage. In his retirement, he built a few boats and traveled the U.S. and wilds of Canada with his wife. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and watching them in their various pursuits.

A die hard University of Michigan fan, you could always find him in front of the TV or sometimes at Maryland or Penn State cheering on the maize and blue. His children can sing Hail to the Victors in their sleep.
Doug was larger than life and always willing to lend a helping hand or tell a good story. He was an avid reader, loved Roger Miller, Johnny Cash, Tennessee Ernie Ford and Marching Band music, and working with his hands.

He was a lifetime member of the Dug Hill Rod & Gun Club, enjoyed the woodshop at the Hampstead Seniors Center, and going to lunch with his buddies.

Doug is survived by his wife Lynne and younger brother Fred of Ionia, Michigan. His children John Piper (Ginny), Susan Snyder (Tim), Douglas Piper (Jenny), and Elizabeth Piper, his nine grandchildren Gunnar Snyder, Allison Warner (Katie Rae), Aidan Snyder, Kathryn Piper, Colin Piper, Behren Snyder (Lauren), Erin Piper, Gabrielle Snyder and Benjamin Piper and his great granddaughter Vivian Warner. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Wayne Lemmerhirt (Jackie), their children Melissa and Ted, his nephew Andrew Piper and niece Sarah Piper Thompson and their children along with many cousins.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army.
