Obituary for Dorothy S. Olsen (Schene)

Dorothy S. Olsen, 97, of Reisterstown, Maryland, peacefully passed away on September 25, 2019. Known by her family and friends as “Dody,” she was born on November 30, 1921 in New Rochelle, New York to the late Louis and Elsa “Humdie” (nee Krollpfeiffer) Schene. Wife of the late Eugene M. Olsen.

Dorothy graduated in 1944 from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree, specializing in bacteriology. In 1946 she married Eugene M. Olsen, who was a Merchant Marine but transferred into the Navy during the Korean war. They moved around quite a bit and moved to Maryland in 1964, where they permanently settled in Reisterstown in 1968. They loved to travel and often visited family in Germany, vacationed in Bermuda and traveled around the states to visit various friends and family. She worked at the University of Maryland Research Department and retired from St. Agnes Hospital in the mid-1980s. She enjoyed golf, swimming, and horseback riding. In her mid-70s, she discovered an aptitude and a love for tennis. She played hard and worked her way into the ranks of the senior tennis pro circuit. She achieved one of her proudest personal goals in her early 80s, when she was invited to play in the seniors’ tournament in Australia. She continued playing well into her late 80s. She was also an avid bridge-player, was very social in her community, and often enjoyed the company of her friends.

She is survived by her daughter Pamela O. Azevedo of Ellicott City, Maryland; son Craig S. Olsen of Wausau, Wisconsin; sister Ruth Mammalis of Henrico, North Carolina; grandchildren Christopher M. Azevedo of Woolwich, Maine, G. Keith Azevedo of Orlando, Florida, Kathrine A. Kastberg of Ellicott City, Maryland, and Mitchell E. Azevedo of Hagerstown, Maryland; and great grandchildren Meredith R. Kastberg, Jack M. Kastberg and Madelyn M. Azevedo. Predeceased by husband Eugene M. Olsen and son E. Mitchell Olsen.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 30, 2019, 11am, at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 203 E. Chatsworth Avenue, Reisterstown, Maryland 21136. Interment in All Saints’ Cemetery. A reception will immediately follow the interment.
