Obituary for Dorothy LaRue Allewalt (Rutledge)

Dorothy LaRue Allewalt, a long-time resident of Reisterstown, Maryland, passed away on September 5, 2020. She was 93 years old. Dorothy LaRue Rutledge was born on September 22, 1926, as the youngest of five children . She loved to read and write poetry, but she was also an athlete. While her girlfriends were learning to Jitterbug, LaRue was on the playground playing baseball with the boys.

After graduating from Western High School in 1945, she attended the Maryland Institute of Art for one year and then went to work at Fidelity and Deposit as a secretary for the manager of the company’s pension plans. There, she met Donald Larrimore Allewalt, whom she married on August 22, 1948. The marriage lasted sixty years until her husband’s death in 2008.

LaRue was a member of Reisterstown United Methodist Church for fifty -seven years. There she enjoyed the fellowship of friends while teaching Sunday School, leading the JOY (Jesus first, Others Second, Yourself last), and being a part of a hymn singing group. Besides her church activities, LaRue also played golf and bridge. Artistic by nature, she was a quilter, and in her later years, LaRue’s talent for painting resurfaced.

LaRue is survived by her three children: Donald L. Allewalt, Jr., of Kentucky, Jo Ann Brandt of Delaware, and Diane Young, of North Carolina; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Donald L. Allewalt, Sr. and daughter, Donna LaRue Allewalt. She will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her, and the phrase, “Stay as sweet as you are” will be her legacy.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, September 11, 2020, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Finksburg, MD.
