Obituary for Deborah Lavern "Debbie" Wilson

Deborah Lavern Wilson (Debbie) died suddenly at home on January 9, 2021 at the age of 70. She was born in Baltimore, MD on November 17, 1950 to Charles and Helen Perry Wilson. Throughout most of her life, she was lovingly cared for by her great uncle and aunt, David and Lessie Perry, as well as her cousin, Annie Bell Jones. Her cousins Delores Mack and Bernard Jones Sr. also lived in the home with Debbie and cared for her as they grew up together.

Debbie loved people and she cherished her family. Although she did not have her sight, she had an amazing memory of dates, times, places, and people. She would often tell others where they were on a certain day many years ago. When we needed a family historian, Debbie often was the one we would ask. Debbie’s listening skills were keen, and in a room full of people, she was immersed in every conversation, and could identify each voice.

Debbie grew up attending Strawbridge United Methodist Church for at least forty years. She loved the Lord and loved to sing hymns for the congregation. Parishioners would have favorites that they would ask Debbie to sing, and she would stand up in the pew and sing from her soul unto the Lord. Debbie later attended the Church of the Open Door in Westminster where she sang a solo at a Christmas event. Music was her passion.

Debbie moved into a group home when she was in her late forties and lived for 22 years with Amy Harrison and her four children, Brittany, David, Shantell, and Jeremy. She became very close to her roommates, Latrail, Deena, and Connie. Debbie enjoyed traveling with the family to Ocean City and camping in West Virginia. She loved collecting rocks, especially those with a defined texture. You could find her pockets drooping because she had picked up several rocks while walking. She loved vacationing with certain groups to Disney World, Virginia Beach, and the Candyland Camp in Maryland. She vacationed in Ocean City every year.

Debbie attended the Deerfield and West End Centers where she made life long friends. She was especially close to Katie Cashman, as well as all the West End staff. At West End, she loved going on shopping trips and eating out with friends. During the Fall Feast parade in Westminster, Debbie could be found sitting on the West End Center float waving to the crowd.

Debbie enjoyed eating! Whenever she went out to eat with her cousin, Patricia, she always wanted to order two meals for herself! She loved eating out at Denny’s. She spent many Christmas’ and Thanksgivings at the Preston and Mack homes. We would always have to pack another meal for her to take home and she would tell us exactly what to pack. She loved being with her family and she would always say, “thank you” at the end of our time together. Debbie was an honest person who had a great sense of humor. She enjoyed telling and listening to stories about various family members and friends.

Now, Debbie is in the presence of the Lord, Almighty. She is sighted and can see her loved ones, but most of all she is face to face with Jesus. We can only imagine what she thought to have her first sight ever to be of heaven!

When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, 11:30am at Western Chapel Cemetery, 1206 Western Chapel Road, New Windsor, MD 21776.
