Obituary for Carol Lee Katen

Carol Katen of Sarasota, Florida passed away peacefully on March 1, 2023, at the age of 77. Carol was born in Providence, RI to Jean T. Shaw and Harris F. Shaw on October 31, 1945. She is survived by her husband, William Katen; children Jay Brotman (Toni) and Philip Brotman; siblings Donna Shaw, Bonnie Gaipo (Bob), Ava Sawyer (Carl), Joseph Shaw, and Mitchell Shaw; grandchildren Thomas Martin, Samantha Thompson, Nathan Brotman and Emilee Brotman; great-grandchildren Madalyn Safford, Leo Thompson, Eleanor Thompson, Thomas Martin Jr., and Sage Martin, and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. Carol had a very loving and protective nature for her family and friends. She loved to cook for them and hosted elaborate Thanksgiving dinners. After all the amazing hors d’oeuvres were served and eaten, there was barely any room left for the plentiful main courses. Guests always ate so much more than planned and took home leftovers, just as Carol intended. She was an animal lover and adored her many pets, both cats and dogs. Carol spent many years in the leather craft and gift business, owning two stores – one in Westminster, MD and another in Wickford, RI. She also had a lengthy career working at MCI Telecommunications where, because of her customer service expertise, was relied upon to handle the most challenging cases. Carol was a very spiritually connected person, was always ready for a meaningful conversation and had a wonderful sense of humor. Carol will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Funeral service will be held 11:00 am Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at Toale Brothers Funeral Home, 40 North Orange Avenue, Sarasota, Florida 34236. The interment will be held at 10:45 am Friday, March 10, 2023, at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery, 11501 Garrison Forest Rd, Owings Mills, MD 21117. In lieu flowers memorials may be made to your charity of choice.
