Erma Stallard Baublitz (nee Underwood), 95, of Sykesville, died on February 6, 2010 at Fairhaven, Sykesville. Born on August 4, 1914 to the late Walter and Amelia Clusman Underwood.
She was married to the late Robert Stallard and the late Jesse Baublitz.
After living a very full 95 years, she left this world at peace as her favorite hymns were being sung to her.
Her life bridged two centuries, experiencing The Depression and the Post War years. A graduate of Maryland State Normal School in 1934, she taught school until she married Robert Banner Stallard in 1936. In 1953 she resumed her career and taught continuously for 27 years. Mrs. Baublitz was considered a pioneer in the emerging field of Special Education. She was amoung the first Special Education teachers and the first Resource Teacher for Special Education in Baltimore County. In 1962 she earned a B.S. of Education from her alma mater, renamed Towson State Teachers College and a Masters of Education from Loyola. Promoted to Administrator, her creativity shaped the early curriculum for Special Education.
During her retirement, Mrs. Baublitz traveled to England, Scotland, Ireland and Turkey. She climbed the Acropolis in Greece in her eighties. A cruise to Alaska remained her favorite adventure. If asked about guideposts for life, her predictable reply was to aim for the best education, learn something new everyday and live as a good Christian.
Survived by her children; Robert Stallard of PA, Carol Wallyn of CA and Deborah O’Neill of MD, her grandsons; Eugene O’Neill of Hawaii, Robert Bruce Stallard of MD and one great grandson, Sean O’Neill of Hawaii.
Family will receive friends at the Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Road, Reisterstown on Friday 2-4 & 6-8PM. Services will be held on Saturday 11:30AM at the Chapel at Fairhaven, Sykesville.
