Obituary for H. Robert "Bob" Ensminger

H. Robert "Bob" Ensminger
Henry Robert “Bob” Ensminger was born on January 19, 1930 in Monango, North Dakota. He was the sixth of eight children born to the late Gottfried and Lydia, nee Schenffel, Ensminger and a first generation American.

Upon receiving his diploma from Monango High School, Bob enlisted in the United States Navy in March, 1950 and trained at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois.

It was during his training that Bob was selected to attend Navy Sonar School, (anti-submarine warfare technics) in Key West, Florida where his class was congratulated by the Secretary of the Navy. Following training, Bob was assigned to the USS Melvin R. Nawman, a destroyer escort, in San Diego, California.

After being Honorably Discharged from the Navy in 1954 as a Korean War Veteran, Bob attended the University of North Dakota on the GI Bill and received a bachelor’s degree in Geology in 1958. Following graduation he was employed by the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office in Washington, D.C. and made 26 oceanic survey cruises. The cruises, lasting about 2 months each, took him to the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic Oceans which included the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, Bering and North Seas and the Hawaiian Islands.

Bob headed west in 1963 and obtained a master’s degree in Oceanography from Oregon State University. He presented his thesis at a scientific symposium in Berne, Switzerland. In 1974 Bob moved to the U.S. Geological Survey and later transferred to the U.S. Bureau of Mines where he was a Foreign Country Mineral Specialist.

Bob retired on April Fool’s Day in 1992. His retirement hobbies included gardening, canning and cooking, beer brewing, bird watching, duck and goose hunting, reading, and listening to classical music.

In 1968 Bob married Mary Ann Sieverts, a Home Economics Teacher in the District of Columbia Public School System. In 1994, after 35 years in the District, Bob and Mary Ann retired to her hometown of Hampstead, Maryland. They celebrated their fiftieth Wedding Anniversary in April of this year.

Bob leaves behind his loving and devoted wife, Mary Ann, brothers, Walter of Grants Pass, Oregon and William of Colorado Springs, Colorado, a sister, Dorothy, of Pasadena, California, and in-laws, John W. Sieverts and wife Donna and Louis B. Sieverts and wife Martha. He is also survived by Christian Sieverts, Amanda Sieverts Cash, Jenna Sieverts Wood, Jeremy Sieverts, E. Randall Ensminger, Barbara Ensminger Janssen, Anthony Cueto, Jr., Michael Cueto, and Michael Ensminger. Uncle Bob will be missed by many other great nieces and nephews. By family request all services are private.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 1375 N. Main Street, Hampstead, MD 21074 or the University of North Dakota, UND Foundation, 3501 University Avenue, Stop 8157, Grand Forks, ND 58202-8157.
