Obituary for Mary E. "Betty" Broderick (Sturm)

Mary E. "Betty" Broderick (Sturm)
Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Broderick (nee Sturm), 95, passed away at her home in Glyndon on October 21, 2017 surrounded by family. She was born on September 21, 1922 in Baltimore, Maryland, one of six children, to the late Maurice C. and Elsie Sturm of “Four Acres” and spent most of her youth at the family summer home in Worthington Valley. She was the wife of the late Charles Richard Broderick, Jr. (1996).

Betty was a graduate of St. Martin’s High School and the Maryland Institute of Art. She was an accomplished artist, potter and quilter who used her degree and natural abilities to bring black and white photographs to life through the addition of color, create beautiful ceramics, lovely paintings and award-winning quilts. A quilt that Betty designed and crafted with a group of local Glyndon women won 2nd place in a statewide competition.

On Nov 18,1944 Betty married Charles R. Broderick, Jr., a Lt. Commander in the US Navy. Together they were blessed with 5 children, 11 grandchildren and 16 (and counting) great grandchildren. It wasn’t until they were expecting their 4th child that they settled in Glyndon, her happy home for 65 years! Betty had many talents, but she always put family first, raising her children and playing an integral role, with her husband Charlie, building a successful family business, The Bees Distributing Co., which was founded in 1955.

In addition to family, Betty was actively involved in the community. She became involved in the effort to create a historic district in 1972 and was a founding member and past president of Historic Glyndon, Inc. and the Glyndon Quilters. In addition, Betty was a Sodality member and a daily communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Glyndon.

With an “empty house” in 1972 Betty took up tennis on their backyard court, which later became the location for the Father Hooper Memorial Tennis Tournament. Betty and Charlie were always generous and allowed the court to be used freely by the community, to foster a love of sports in others.. “Bees on the Bay” in Ocean City, MD was Betty and Charlie’s summer home. Once again her generosity and hospitality allowed many to enjoy her beautiful home and sunsets.

She is survived by children Patricia A. Clifford (Michael) of Reisterstown, Carol F. Wissel (Ed) of Glyndon, Charles “Rick” Broderick, III (Linda) of Reisterstown, Mary E. “Beth” Hannon (Steve) of Reisterstown; Dennis S. Broderick (Stephanie) of Finksburg; sister Frances Hviding of Upperco; brother in law Joe Geipe of Glyndon; grandchildren Andy Wissel, Michael Wissel (Kelly), John Wissel (Meredith), Steven Hannon, Jr. (Amanda), Emmy Hale (Jeff), Amy Broderick (Mac), Chad Broderick, IV (Brittany), Evan Broderick (Laura), Kyle Broderick; great grandchildren Tyler Lynn and Logan T. Hannon, Ellie and Grace Hale, Jayden Hughes, Addison, Lauren, Carter, Charlie, Hudson, Andrew, Maxwell, Penelope, Fletcher and Daisy Wissel, Wade Bracey.

In addition to her parents and husband, Betty is predeceased by her brother M.C. Sturm, Jr., sisters, Mary A. Reisner, Anne Louise Sturm and Jane Frances Geipe and grandsons Arthur E. “Chip” Wissel and Timothy R. “Timmy” Hannon.
